In Chinese, when we say “go to hospital”, we actually want to express that we need to see a doctor. In fact, “go to hospital” is not very idiomatic in English. In most of the English-speaking countries, people will see their family doctors or go to clinics when they catch a cold, have fever or other minor ailments. Because “hospital” usually means a general hospital and it also has the meaning of “hospitalization”. If someone says, “I need to go to the hospital”, foreigners may think he is so sick that he even has mortal danger. It will cause such a big misunderstanding.
